Early Life and Naval Career
Sir Donald Gosling's lifelong passion for sailing began at a tender age.
At nine, his mother took him to Portsmouth's Round Tower, where they witnessed the comings and goings of warships. From that moment, Gosling's heart belonged to the sea, and joining the Royal Navy seemed an inevitable path.
After active service during the latter part of World War II, Gosling found himself out of the Navy due to postwar downsizing.
He retrained as a surveyor, but his desire to return to water remained unfulfilled. With modest savings, he acquired his first "yacht": a foot clinker boat.
